Arctic Fjords and Reindeer Experience

This exciting experience by Wondering Reindeer combines several experiences into one and takes you to islands, fjords, mountains and more. This Sami tour gives you a glimpse into the indigenous way of life, and you will even get to greet lovely reindeer!

The day begins around 10 a.m. at the Scandic Ishavshotel in Tromsø City Center, from where you will start a scenic drive to the island of Kvaløya. Here, you can enjoy a panoramic view of towering mountains and Arctic fjords as you drive. You can even make stops along the way to fully take in the sights around you.

Around noon, you will reach Sommarøy, a group of islands in the middle of the sea. The island boasts gorgeous white sand beaches expanding into the clear ocean. Here, you will have an opportunity to venture out into the neighbourhood and explore the local community.

Lunch will be served at the Sommarøy Arctic Hotel. You can enjoy fish soup with homemade bread produced using local ingredients, as well as vegetarian and gluten-free options. The hotel has an elaborate menu with a lot of options. However, if you have any unique requests, you can make them while booking the tour.

After an hour or so, you resume the trip with a visit to a Sami reindeer herder and his reindeer who live in the mountain near Sommarøy. Get a glimpse at the life of a reindeer herder as he uses a bell to summon his herd. When the pack has been corralled, you may feed the animals!

Once the reindeer are fed, you can retire to a Sami Lavvo (tent) and enjoy hot chocolate, coffee or tea around an open fire while learning about Sami culture. You will also get the chance to participate in joiking, a traditional form of song in Sami culture. After a couple of memorable hours, you will begin the trip back to the starting point in Tromsø.
